What a budget automatic litter box does not tell you
Across the 16 budget and legacy records in this index, 15 publish no litter guidance at all, 12 document no sensing mechanism, and 16 publish no entry height. Those products account for roughly half the units sold in this category.
The short answer. If you buy a sub-$250 self-cleaning litter box, in most cases the manufacturer will not tell you which litter it can handle, how large a cat it accommodates, or what its sensors do before the drum turns. That information does not exist in public. It is not that we could not find it.
Why this happens
Most budget listings are sold by trading companies rather than by the manufacturer. Several of the brand domains in this index do not resolve at all. Of the four shared platforms we identified, two have no locatable manufacturer documentation of any kind, and one is sold with no resolvable brand name.
The premium tier is different in kind, not just in degree: Whisker and PETKIT publish full instruction manuals with dimension tables, litter exclusions and stated cat-weight limits. PetSafe publishes manuals that contradict its own product pages — and the manuals are the stricter document.

What to do with this
- If you use anything other than clumping clay, the absence of a litter statement is a real risk — tofu and pellet litters are the ones manufacturers most often exclude when they bother to say.
- If you have a large cat, note that the budget tier rarely publishes a maximum cat weight, and where two listings on the same platform do publish one, they sometimes disagree with each other.
- The documented tier is not automatically better hardware. It is better documented, which is the only thing this index can tell you.
